Uganda is a flawless birding and primate tracking destination and it is home to various primate and birdwatching sites. So they are some of the amazing wildlife to find in its national parks and protected reserves, apart from the big game.

The country is home to a number of birds with an estimate of over 1’060 species and a primate count of more than 15 species. Uganda has nearly 5’000 Chimpanzee Great Apes only out matched by Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa.

There are over 18 countries worldwide whose bird-list hits the 1000 mark and Uganda is the smallest. So this makes the country a perfect birding destination, where you can see a big count in a short time.  According to UKs Wanderlust Magazine, the country has 3 of Africa’s top Chimpanzee tracking site, and this makes it an impeccable primate tracking destination.

You will visit Kibale forest national park during this birding and primate tracking safari in Uganda. The forest has more than 370 bird species and 13 of primates tacked in its 795sq.km boundary. You will also visit Semuliki national park known for various rift valley endemics and west-central African species. You will also visit Murchison Falls and the adjacent Budongo forest to complete you primate and birding quest.

Note: Welcome to the Birders Paradise! Meet and Greet from the company guide on arrival at the airport. You then will be transferred to the hotel in Kampala for your stay.

  • For a successful birding experience, you need to start the day early before sunrise and also in the evening hours. These are good times to see the birds as they leave and return to their nests. Most species are usually active before afternoon hours and as the sunsets

Package Itinerary

Depart Kampala early after breakfast at the overnight hotel, travel to Fort Portal where you have a lunch break then continue to the lodge where your stay will be. The lodges here are perfectly located and you decide to relax with serene view of the nearby craters or forests, you may choose to do some simple and introductory birding in the vicinity of the accommodation.

Leave the lodge very early after breakfast and head to the park reception area, its here you start off your primate tracking and birding safari experience in Kibale forest. After briefing from the ranger, you then enter the forest to start tracking the Chimpanzees, this activity lasts to 3 hours with 1 hour for watching the Chimps. On this ritual, you encounter lots of other primates like Vervets, Blue Monkeys, Black & White colobus, and Olive Baboons among others.
After a lunch break, you will enjoy the evening calls of the African jungle on a late afternoon to evening birdwatching experience in Kibale forest. On this nature walk, you come across a number of birds including forest mainly and other non-forest species.

O/n: Crater safari lodge(Luxury) /Primate Lodge (Midrange)

Today you head out to Bigodi wetland, near Kibale forest, where you will take on a birding Uganda safari experience. You will come across a number of primates in this wetland which is a wildlife corridor to the park.
The wetland is home to over 200 bird species and 8 of primates, on the three hour guided nature walk around it, you will come across birds like the Great Blue Turaco, Black-crowned Waxbill, White-spotted Flufftail, Yellow-spotted Barbet, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Bocage’s Bush-shrike, Yellow-billed Barbet, White-breasted Negrofinch, Brown-crowned Tchagra, Black Bishop and primates like Grey Cheeked Mangabey, L’Hoest Monkeys, Black and White Colobus, Red Colobus Monkeys, Red Colobus, Blue Monkeys, Vervet Monkeys, Olive Baboons and others.
Afterwards, leave for Semliki National Park

Leave the lodge very early after breakfast and go birding deep in the heart of Semliki national park. You have two birdwatching session starting early morning and in the late afternoon with each session taking about 3-4 hours. On the forest nature walk through the park, you will come across primates like the Black and White Colobus, Vervets, Red-tailed Monkeys, Olive Baboons and Chimpanzees if lucky, among others.
You will also visit the hot spring; the park’s famous attraction made of the male and female springs. Return to the lodge in the evening for relaxation and your stay.

O/n: Semliki Safari lodge (Luxury)

Leave the lodge after breakfast, then go for a morning game viewing session in the wildlife reserve of Tooro-Semliki, the reserve is home to a number of mammals like Elephants, Buffalos, Reedbucks, Bush Pigs, Baboons and many more that you expect to encounter. Afterwards, transfer through the Great Bunyoro region and the Albertine rift valley region to Hoima or Masindi. Overnight will be at the lodge or hotel here.

O/night: Bugoma Jungle lodge/ Miika Resort hotel (Midrange)

Departure to the northward direction heading to Budongo forest reserve located in the southern sector of Murchison falls national park.
After lunch, you head out for an evening birding session through the reserve, this birding Uganda experience within Budongo will occur along the Royal Mile. Bird watching here is extremely intriguing with experience of the canopy towering overhead. This mahogany and ironwood forest is home to over 360 bird species and 9 of primates.

O/night: Paraa Safari lodge (Luxury) /Murchison River lodge (Midrange).

Wake up to the early calls of the birds, and head out Budongo forest’s Kaniyo Pabidi section where you will be for today’s birding Uganda safari experience. Trails through this forest will lead you to an encounter with birds like the Puvel’s Illadopsis, African pied wagtail, Black kite, Crested Guinea fowl, and Olive-breasted greenbul among others. The morning present remarkable moments to see the birds as they leave their nests.
This nature walk lasts about 3 hours and then leave Budongo forest to Murchison falls national park and visit top of the falls, where you see the Nile exploding through a gorge creating a trademark rainbow and misty spray.

Leave the lodge very early after breakfast and go for birding downstream to the Nile delta point, this area presents favorable moments to see the rare Shoebill stork- a prehistoric looking bird often seen in the marshes at the delta, this trip lasts about 2-3 hours.
In the afternoon after your lunch break, you go for another boat/ launch cruise along the Victoria Nile heading upstream the Nile to the bottom of the exquisite falls and this point presents remarkable Kodak moments. The trip upstream rewards you with scenes of wildlife like birds along the cliffs and marshes at the banks as well as mammals like Elephants, Buffalos, Hippopotamuses and many others like reptiles.

Today you do an early game drive at the northern section of the park, where you will be able to see lots of big and small game and this safari game drive marks the end of this birding and primate tracking Uganda safari. Expect to encounter game like the African Elephants, Jackson’s Hartebeests, Buffalos and many others in these rich African savannas. Then hit the road back to Kampala and drop off is at the hotel or the airport for your international flight back home.
